The Nansemond River Preservation Alliance (NRPA) is a certified 501 (c) 3 created in 2009 by group of fourteen concerned city of Suffolk residents. Today, NRPA has 300 citizens who joined NRPA by making a donation. We are grateful for the over 1,000 citizens (children through seasoned adults) who have volunteered for our programs, projects and activities.

The NRPA mission is to raise public awareness and encourage environmental stewardship of the Nansemond River, Chuckatuck Creek, Bennett’s Creek and their tributaries and wetlands by developing and implementing programs and  initiating collaborative actions with individuals, businesses, civic organizations and governmental agencies.

NRPA has four main action points:

  1. Develop a strategy and implementation plan to restore Suffolk’s waterways to full health. Activities include monthly sampling of the Nansemond River and analysis, plus bi-annually releasing the State of the Nansemond River Report and Report Card.

  2. Develop environmental educational resources and implement programs throughout Suffolk.

  3. Promote actions and programs to preserve and conserve the region’s water quality, wetlands, wildlife refuges, and viewsheds.

  4. Work with the city to to improve public access to the waterways for recreational purposes.
