State of the River Report
The Nansemond River Preservation Alliance proudly presents the State of the River Report 2025 for the Nansemond River. This report examines the status of the river using five indicators: Bacteria, Oxygen, Nitrates, Phosphates and Suspended Solids. We are concerned about the state of the river and hope you will help us take action in your own backyard.
Note : While this report summarizes data, full data and graph analysis is available to view below.
Key Points from the Report
in 2025 600 acres were released from condemned status! This is progress that should be celebrated! However, the work is not done, large rain events could put these restored acres back into condemned status.
What we have learned from this transition helps us understand how we can better restore areas of the river and if it can be done once it can be done again!
The Nansemond River is not scoring well on some basic indicators of health in the upper river.
Learn more about each indicator through the data analysis below.
